Floyd Webb was born in Norfolk, Neb, on February 21, 1924, and died in Turlock, Calif, in 1989. He was a San Francisco artist who painted its hippies and punks as well as its socialites. His commercial art included the San Francisco murals in the New Orleans Fairmont Hotel and the New Orleans jazz murals in the San Francisco Hotel. He was also a well-known illustrator of childrens books. His silverpoint paintings of the city in the 60s and 70s captured the romance and contradictions of that era. His portrait of Mme Marcelle Labaudt (Figure 1) was painted in broad strokes, as Webb was suffering from osteoarthritis and had difficulty manipulating finer brushes. He used atypical tools, including chopsticks, for this portrait, displayed at the Lucien Labaudt Gallery on Gough Street in 1980.
Figure appears in full text version.
