Facial plastic surgeons and their patients are constantly striving to achieve larger, fuller, poutier, more sensual lips. Numerous techniques have been described and are being used with varying degrees of success and difficulty. Each technique has fervent proponents as well as passionate critics. It is safe to say that any given technique used is as good as the ability and experience of the hands performing it. Permanent and biodegradable injectable fillers, expanded polytetrafluoroethylene implants, homograft and autograft implants, and direct surgical enlargements are well documented in the literature.1-3
The subnasal liplift4 and direct lip advancement5 are external surgical approaches for lip augmentation. In my experience, both procedures work well but have the drawback of an external scar that is distressing to some patients.
