The close of the 19th century witnessed the birth of modern facial plastic surgery, with pioneers such as Jacques Joseph and John Orlando Roe at the center stage of this new revolution. Despite the burgeoning technical innovations in surgery that were introduced at this time, the public was reticent to embrace the ungodly connotations associated with cosmetic surgery. The early period of facial plastic surgery was shrouded in secrecy in the surgeons' combined attempt to guard highly prized techniques and ward off the public stigma of performing vanity surgery. Trying to unravel the history of early face-lift procedures is therefore daunting. Practitioners abounded who advocated the straightforward subcutaneous rhytidectomy that primarily addressed the face, but failed to incorporate aspects of the neck in their rejuvenative efforts.
