DRS KOCH and Perkins1 have presented a very interesting retrospective analysis of simultaneous rhytidectomy and carbon dioxide laser resurfacing. The first part of their article reports their experience with this combination of procedures in 30 patients. All 30 patients had the procedure performed by the second author using a modified deep-plane facelift technique. Laser resurfacing was then performed using an UltraPulse laser (Coherent Inc, Palo Alto, Calif). In this series there were 2 complications and no incidence of skin flap loss or skin slough. The authors then compiled data from different sources on combined laser resurfacing and facelift procedures. This compilation of reports also did not demonstrate an increased complication rate compared with facelifts without resurfacing. The specifics of the techniques for facelift and/or laser resurfacing varied in these reports.
The obvious questions are: Is this combination safe? And if it is safe, under what conditions is it safe?
