GENERAL JOHN Burgoyne is best known in history as the general who led the British forces in the Battle of Saratoga during the American Revolution in 1777. He was born the son of a baronet in 1722 and entered the 13th Light Dragoons in 1740. Three years later he eloped with Lady Elizabeth Stanley, the daughter of the 11th Earl of Derby, and the couple moved to France to escape mounting debts. With the help of his father-in-law, Burgoyne obtained a commission and served in the Seven Years' War in 1756 and while the war was still going on was elected to Parliament in 1761. Under the command of Count La Lippe Bückeburg, Burgoyne led British forces in a decisive victory over the Spanish at Valencia de Alcántara in Portugal. With his successes in the Portuguese campaign, Burgoyne became a national hero and was hailed in London as "Gentleman Johnny." . . . [Full Text of this Article]
