ALBERTO F. Borges, MD, a genuinely original thinker in the field of
facial plastic surgery, is best known for his innumerable contributions in
the literature pertaining to scar revision, especially the "running W-plasty."
His textbook titled Elective Incisions and Scar Revision1 forms the foundation for modern approaches
to revision of functionally or aesthetically displeasing scars. He is probably
best known for naming the "relaxed skin tension lines" inherent in skin2 and explaining for the surgeon the real significance
of these lines, whose existence had been known since Baron Guillaume Dupuytren
in 1834.
Alberto Borges was born in Havana, Cuba, on October 29, 1919. One of
5 children, he excelled in both academics and athletics at the University
