TORD SKOOG (Figure 1) was
born in Sweden in 1915, and attended medical school at the University of Uppsala.
There, he continued his postgraduate training in general surgery and showed
an early interest in plastic surgery. In 1945, Skoog went to Finland to study
the reconstructive treatment of war casualties. He later trained in England
with Sir Harold Gillies and Sir Archibald McIndoe. In 1952, Skoog visited
the United Nations forces in Korea to study the treatment of burns. On his
return to Sweden in 1954, he was appointed director of plastic surgery for
the University Hospital of Uppsala and was given quarters within the otolaryngology
department. He soon developed his own burn unit and was appointed the first
permanent professor of plastic surgery in Scandinavia. He was an honorary
