Basic Surgical Skills is a paperbound manual with accompanying CD-ROM written for medical students and physicians starting surgical training. The book is designed to be user friendly and the CD-ROM reviews the basics and provides animated and live-filmed video presentations.
The manual provides the information that medical students should know after completion of their first rotation on a surgical service. It covers surgical scrub, anesthetics, infiltration techniques, basic instrumentation, incisions, wound closures, suture material, knot tying, the fundamentals of tissue injury, wound healing, and general postoperative care. It also provides a description and diagrams of various cutaneous flaps.
To speed the learning process, the book is primarily visual, using drawings and photographs supplemented by an abbreviated text. The illustrations are superbly done. The manual also provides a glossary of words that appear underlined in the text. This book is highly recommended for the appropriate reader.
