Facial plastic surgery is a unique specialty. Outcomes are difficult to quantitate and are determined by a sometimes unpredictable mix of art, craft, science, technology, and psychology. Our literature reflects this complexity. Both as authors and readers we prefer graphically rich presentations that describe interesting surgical procedures. Those who teach have at any one time a number of requests to write chapters or brief articles on procedures they perform. These may include a literature review but rarely involve a detailed analysis of the author's experience and outcomes. In a given year a surgeon, especially if residents or fellows are involved, may produce several such manuscripts. They are usually of good quality and are useful educational materials. They do not, however, provide data that allow us to choose between competing treatments and thus scientifically improve our outcomes.
