JACQUES JOSEPH, MD (1865-1934), the father of aesthetic rhinoplasty, performed one of the first reduction rhinoplastic procedures in 1898 (Figure 1). Following completion of his medical studies at Frederich Wilhelm University, Berlin, Germany, Joseph entered a 4-year association with famed orthopedic surgeon, Julius Wolff, MD. This relationship ended when Joseph performed a much-needed otoplasty on Wolff's patient. Despite the success of the operation, Joseph's maverick approach to surgery placed him in private practice. He functioned initially as a general practitioner; however, his desire to perform surgery of an aesthetic and restorative nature grew.
