The 3-day annual meeting of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery included approximately 300 presentations with almost half dedicated to lasers in dermatologic and plastic surgery. Far and away the 2 "hottest" topics dealt with laser skin resurfacing (54 presentations) and laser hair removal (30 presentations). Both areas have generated great interest and excitement among physicians and the public.
Laser Skin Resurfacing
Two clinical studies comparing 1 pass with a resurfacing carbon dioxide laser with 4 or 5 passes at 5 J/cm2 with an Er:YAG laser on facial skin found no clinically significant difference in depth of thermal damage, healing time, erythema duration, or the expected minimal rhytid improvement achieved with such a superficial treatment.1-2 This supports the idea that resurfacing carbon dioxide lasers, when used with low energy fluences, can achieve as superficial a treatment as the Er:YAG laser.
