INTRODUCTION
It is with great pleasure that I present the Conley Lecture for 1998, which I consider a very special honor indeed. Dr John Conley was a revered physician when I was a resident student in Ann Arbor, Mich, and Columbus, Ohio (Figure 1). I had the pleasure of meeting this great man on a number of occasions.

TEACHER
I particularly remember renewing my acquaintance with Conley when he came to the first Wurzburg course in Wurzburg, Germany, organized by Prof Horst L. Wullstein in 1968, the beginning of what proved to be a long and fruitful association between German and American colleagues for more than 3 decades. I am proud that I also played a small part in fostering this association.
