Joseph Wong, MD, FRCSC, and colleagues discuss a modification of the continuous buried tarsal stitch to create an upper eyelid crease in the Asian patient. They convey the results in 1648 patients and the simplicity and success of this procedure.
Mu discusses 585 cases using malar reduction and mandibular reshaping techniques to establish an optimal contour. Surgical approaches to the malarplasty and mandibular reshaping procedures, including a comparison of the wedge-shaped excision and inclined-fullness osteotomy, are presented.
Wu and colleagues describe a technique performed with an anchor suture to directly attach the dermis of the pretarsal skin to the upper edge of the tarsal plate at a key point. Seventy-two patients underwent the procedure with reliable results.
Augmentation rhinoplasty using e-polytetrafluoroethylene has been performed in China since 1976. Originally, there were high incidences of complications, but Dong and associates present a series of 1700 patients who underwent this procedure with their new criteria and surgical procedures with excellent outcomes.
Bilateral extended spreader grafts are widely used in Asia to provide tip support, improve tip projection, and control nasal shape. Jung and colleagues report pressure necrosis of the septal cartilage associated with the technique and develop an animal model to study it.
Mild to moderate forms of constricted ear malformations are difficult to correct. Pan and colleagues present their innovative surgical approach in 62 consecutive cases in which patients underwent a tumbling cartilage flap, auricular composite graft, or a combination of these procedures.
The definition of facial beauty often reflects underlying cultural norms and understanding. Wong and colleagues discuss the aesthetic concepts and surgical implications of Chinese face reading. Six illustrative cases are thoughtfully presented.
The double-eyelid blepharoplasty is a complex operation that results in some dissatisfied patients. Zhang and colleagues discuss 415 such patients and categorize them in terms of the complication and method of repair. Specific surgical techniques are recommended for each problem.
Seo and colleagues describe a prefabricated 3-dimensional nasal tip graft formed from autologenous cartilage pieces with octyl-2-cyanoacrylate adhesive. In an experimental animal model, the cartilage was well preserved and there were no untoward effects. Aesthetic results in 42 clinical cases in Asian noses were excellent.
Epicanthoplasty can be used to help improve the appearance of the medial epicanthal fold. Zhao and Luo describe a modified Y-V epicanthoplasty in 68 cases. Excellent results and no incidences of hypertrophic scarring were noted.
